The Scafidi Lab
Joey and Susanna Scafidi, along with their team of researchers and collaborators, conduct mechanistic research on developmental brain research. The lab is based in Baltimore, Maryland at the Kennedy Krieger Institute and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.
As clinicians, we provide multidisciplinary care to patients with developmental brain injury – the predominant populations being children born very preterm, those with congenital heart disease, and those who have acquired neurological injury. We bring our bedside experience to the bench; our clinical expertise directly informs our goal of understanding neonatal brain injury and its long-term consequences.
Our current research is focused on the acute and long-term metabolic dysregulation following developmental brain injury. We use both animal models and biochemical techniques to answer these questions.
